Risk of shock, electrocution from printer cords prompts recall

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of 2.5 million DeskJet and Photosmart printer cords last week.

The recall covers a group of cords produced by Longwell Electronics for Hewlitt Packard printers. Printers affected by the recall include HP Deskjet 800 series and 900 series, HP Photosmart 1000 series, 1100 series, 1200 series and 1300 series. According to the CPSC, the LS-7C connector cords for these printers can break, exposing electrical wires and posing a risk of shock or electrocution.

Cavalier Computers sells printers in the HP Deskjet 800 and 900 series.

Hewlitt Packard is offering free replacement cords to anyone who received the defective products. Concerned people should call 1-877-917-4378. The CPSC said in a written statement the recall is a precautionary measure and no injuries have been reported as a result of the problem with the cords.

University researchers find black women have high risk of stroke

Researchers at the University of Virginia Health System published a study in the April issue of Stroke, reporting that black women have extremely high rates of stroke risk factors.

Stroke risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, obesity and lack of leisure exercise. The study also found that black women have higher incidences of these factors than do black men. Karen Johnston and Bradford Worrall, who led the study, stressed the fact that most stroke risk factors are modifiable and education on stroke prevention can help reduce risks.

Before this study was conducted, there was little information about stroke risk factors within the black population. Still, more data is needed. Currently, strokes are the third most common cause of death among black women in the United States. --Compiled by Josh Goodman and Sarah Salwen
