Men's basketball to open season against Chaminade

The University's men's basketball team will open up the season at the EA Sports Maui Invitational in Hawaii on Nov. 25. The Cavaliers will tip off at 2 p.m. EST against Chaminade University, the host of the eight-team tournament.

Other first-round games in the tournament on November 25 include Massachusetts at Indiana, Arizona State against Kentucky and Utah at Gonzaga.

If victorious, the Cavaliers will play the winner of the Arizona State-Kentucky game in the semifinals on the following day.

Chaminade and Virginia have faced off four times in the past, with the Cavaliers winning three out of the four games.

The tournament concludes on Nov. 27, with the championship game scheduled to tip at 9:30 p.m.

Volleyball team earns first victory of season

After beginning the season with two defeats, the Cavalier volleyball team grabbed its first victory of the season with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-11, 30-17) triumph over Texas-Pan American in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. The win clinched a third-place finish in the tournament for the Cavaliers, and sophomore setter Lily Phillips earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Sophomore outside hitter Celeste Laborde drove the Cavaliers to victory with a career-best 12 kills with no errors for a .600 hitting percentage.

Junior outside hitter Paige Davis added 12 kills, and almost achieved a double double with nine digs. She also recorded three blocks and two service aces.

The Cavaliers held a 44-22 edge in kills as well as a 58-40 advantage in digs. The Cavaliers also destroyed the Lady Broncos in blocks, posting nine compared to three for Texas-Pan American.
