Groh rounds out Virginia coaching lineup
Virginia football coach Al Groh completed his coaching staff for the 2003 season, naming several appointments yesterday.
Groh filled the most gaping hole in his staff, offensive coordinator, with offensive line coach Ron Price.
Price, who also will continue to coach the offensive line, will replace outgoing coordinator Bill Musgrave. Musgrave left the Cavalier program for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.
Groh also added to the responsibilities his son Mike Groh, naming him quarterbacks coach for next season in addition to wide receivers coach, a position he held last year. The younger Groh will undoubtedly draw upon his personal experience as a former Virginia signal caller when he assumes his new role with the team this fall.
Former NFL offensive lineman Andy Heck was named the Cavalier's new tight ends coach. Heck was picked by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 1989 draft after serving as a captain of Notre Dame's 1988 national championship team.
Two former Cavalier standouts received promotions from Groh to graduate assistants for offense. Anthony Poindexter, a three-time, first-team All-ACC football selection for Virginia, was last season's graduate assistant for strength and conditioning. His fellow offensive graduate assistant for 2003 will be David Cadaret. Cadaret, last season's graduate assistant for video, was a pole vaulter for Virginia's track and field team as an undergraduate.
Tim Whitney was named defensive graduate assistant after winning four football letters at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and coaching high school football in the D.C. area for one year.
Whitney's former position with the Cavalier squad, graduate assistant for recruiting, will be filled by Brad Durbin. Durbin, a reserve tailback for Virginia last season, will be responsible for maintaining a recruiting database containing over 3000 names.
