Women's club tennis plays well at UNC, looks forward to national tournament

The women's club tennis team traveled to North Carolina this past weekend to battle Duke, N.C. State and UNC.On Saturday the Cavaliers tied Duke with a score of 5-5 and crushed N.C. State, 9-0. Sunday morning U.Va. defeated UNC, 8-3. Seniors Nicole Griglione, Shannon Christensen, Rachel Rosenbaum, juniors Sandy McCarthy, Courtenay Evans, sophomore Meghan Thompson and freshmen Mallori Browne, Andrea Lawhon and Heather Blish all contributed to the victory.

This Wednesday, the team will send six girls to the National Club Tennis Tournament in Florida. Griglione, Browne, juniors Jackie Culver and Jessica Rackley, and sophomores Shoa Tavassoli and Maria Cristina Murguruza were selected.The team hopes to top last year's third place showing.

The team's next match is Saturday against Penn, to be held at St. Anne's Belfield School at 1:00p.m.

Club swimming hosts inaugral 'Waterfest'

The Virginia swimming club hosted seven teams this past weekend at the first annual "Wet Wahoos' Waterfest". Teams in attendance were Duke, ECU, JMU, UNC, Pennsylvania, William and Mary and Virginia Tech. Over 100 swimmers competed for team points during the three-hour meet at the AFC. Virginia's women won their competition while the men finished third behind first place UNC and William and Mary. In the joint competition, the Wet Wahoos finished second behind UNC.

The Wet Wahoos next compete April 5 at UNC.
