Softball wins 49er Invitational

The Virginia Cavaliers took home the gold in last weekend's 49er Invitational, played at University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Virginia defeated the Akron Zips, 2-0, in the finals after having been shutout by them in round-robin play, 7-0.

Freshman Erin Horn allowed only three hits and struck out a career-high 12 batters en route to her first collegiate shutout. She was named All-Tournament Pitcher for her performance and improved to 5-5 on the season.

The Cavaliers' overall record now sits at 10-10 after having concluded their spring break trip with a 5-6 record.

Next up for Virginia is the school's very own Cavalier Classic, to be held at The Park beginning March 14.

Chris Rotelli named men's lacrosse National, ACC Player of the Week

In knocking off Princeton, 10-7, senior midfielder Chris Rotelli scored four goals and added an assist. He was rewarded with Warrior/Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week honors in addition to ACC Player of the Week for his play.

The victory against Princeton was Virginia's second win in as many weeks over a top-five team after the Cavaliers defeated Syracuse, 16-15 the week before. It also was their second straight National Player of the Week award -- sophomore attackman John Christmas received that distinction following his four-goal, one-assist performance against the Orangemen that included the game-winning goal scored in the game's last minute.

Cavaliers take third at ACC Championships

Virginia seniors Bob Seidel and Josh Etu each won individual titles in their respective weight classes to help the Cavaliers garner 68 points in the ACC Wrestling Championships, but it was not enough to beat North Carolina who managed 104.5.

Five Tar Heels won individual titles and all 10 competing North Carolina wrestlers placed in the top three in their respective classes. N. C. State finished second with 86 points and three individual titles.

Senior Joe Alexander, senior Brian Muir and sophomore Zach Freday were runner-ups in the 134, 174 and 194-pound weight classes, respectively.

Seidel swept all three matches with relative ease on the way to his title in the 141-pound weight class. He defeated North Carolina's Brian Baglio, 2-0, to earn the crown.

North Carolina's Ryan Adams took Etu to overtime before Virginia's heavyweight triumphed, 2-1. Etu received a first round bye and then defeated Mark Reid of Maryland 3-1 in the semifinal.
