Vander Laan leaves basketball program

Only two years after he transferred into the Virginia basketball program, center Nick Vander Laan announced yesterday that he will leave the school and attend Concordia University in Irvine, Ca. during the 2003-04 academic year.

"We appreciate all that Nick did for us on and off the court the last two years," Virginia coach Pete Gillen said in a press release. "We wish him well in his future endeavors."

Vander Laan averaged 5.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 15.3 minutes per game last season with the Cavaliers. His statistics dropped from his sophomore year at the University of California Berkely, where he scored 6.2 points and pulled down 5.3 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game.

After two seasons at California, and one with Virginia, Vander Laan still has one year of eligibility remaining if he plays in a program that is not NCAA Division I.
