The Virginia field hockey team (4-1) defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 2-1, Friday night in Richmond thanks to high shots and a strong defensive effort.
Both Cavalier goals laced the upper netting of the cage, as Katie Nicholson chipped a ball from just inside the circle for Virginia's first goal and Allie Flynn tipped in a Juli Bojanic free hit to break a 1-1 tie late in the game.
The Cavaliers hit the scoreboard first, 16:31 into the contest, as Dana Anderson intercepted a VCU free hit above the 25 and sent it to Katie Phillips at the top of the circle. Phillips passed the ball off to the right to Nicholson, who chipped it to the roof of the cage.
Bojanic tallied her first career point with 7:55 left in the contest with an assist to Flynn for the game-winning goal.
The Cavalier defense held VCU to just one shot on goal in the first half, and turned away three corners in the second half when the score was tied.
Virginia returns to action Wednesday as they host James Madison at the University Hall Turf Field at 7:00 pm.
