Washington put on probation

According to ESPN.com, the Pac-10 has placed University of Washington on a year-long probation after charging Washington with gambling violations and improper recruitment.

The violations surfaced after the dismissal of former football coach Rick Neuheisel.

In addition to the probation, the conference has ordered Washington to do an in-depth review of its athletic program, which it had already begun on its own. Neuheisel was fired after being charged with participating in high-stakes gambling on the NCAA tournament and further probes found instances of smaller-stakes gambling among staff members. The university was also charged with taking football recruits on improper boat rides.
