The First-year Facebook and the Greek Directory have long provided curious students with information about their peers and secret crushes. Nowadays, these traditional University directories are being replaced by a much more comprehensive and global source, www.thefacebook.com.

The Facebook is an online directory that provides a social network for students at a number of colleges around the country, and it is taking the University by storm.

"Two of my friends had told me about it over lunch the other day," first-year College student Dave Duchen said. "The same day I walked into my friends' room, and they were browsing through all these pictures and screaming at me about how cool it was."

According to a March 31 article in The Daily Princetonian, the Facebook was started at Harvard University in January by sophomore Mark Zuckerberg and has spread to all the Ivy League schools, Boston University, New York University, Berkeley, Stanford, Duke, Georgetown, MIT and, of course, our dear old University.

Since the Facebook became available to University students this past Sunday, 1,548 students have joined, Facebook spokesperson and Harvard sophomore Chris Hughes said. A total of 57,811 college students have joined the Facebook nationwide.

Hughes said the Facebook decided to add the University to its already-existing list of colleges because members on the existing network are likely to have friends here on Grounds.

Second-year College student Lauren Skrincosky said she recently joined the inter-collegiate phenomenon.

"I have a friend who goes to Dartmouth, and I received an e-mail from her requesting to be my friend," Skrincosky said.

First-year College student Minoo Sobhani said she also has been connected with friends from other schools.

"I have like 10 friends from Stanford, UPenn and Cornell," Sobhani said. "I am connected to more than 300 people now."

The site allows its members to put up a picture, a detailed profile and a "social net" of friends. The database also includes a mysterious "poking" function.

"It's very random and funny," Sobhani said. "I have no idea what it is."

Students shared differing opinions on the Facebook.

"I think it's a cool idea that will work very well with our fascination with AIM," Skrincosky said. "And now we can see pictures, so it's even better."

However, second-year College student Maureen Bowman said she has a different opinion.

"I joined it just to see, and to be honest, I find it pretty dorky," Bowman said. "It's a little addictive though, it's the new version of Snood."

Duchen is skeptical too, but he said his opinion of the site may change.

"It looks stupid to me," Duchen said. "But curiosity might make me join it."

Now that the University has joined the craze, go ahead and "poke" someone. All the cool kids are doing it, so why don't you?
