Zimmerman named to USA Baseball National Team

Virginia third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was one of 22 players to be named to the final roster of the USA Baseball National Team Monday.

Manager Frank Cruz narrowed the team down from the original 36 players on the roster after a four-game series against Canada in North Carolina last weekend. Zimmerman went 4-11 at the plate, including two home runs. He was also one of only two players to appear in all of the team's games.

Team USA failed to qualify for the Olympics, so Zimmerman will not have the chance to compete in Athens this summer. The schedule for the team does include five games on the road against Japan (July 2-8), home against Chinese Taipei (July 15-18) and then a return to Asia to compete in the FISU World University Games in Tainan, Taiwan (July 22-August 1).

At Virginia last season, Zimmerman was a first-team All-ACC selection as a sophomore. He led the team in batting average (.371) and hits (83) in addition to his 44 RBI and 44 runs scored.
