University re-evaluates employee overtime

Estimated reading time: 1 minutes

The University recently changed its overtime classification system to allow more employees to receive overtime pay, according to a University news release.

According to the release, the changes, which affect 333 positions, were made after revisions to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act took effect Aug. 23.

While critics of the revisions have said fewer workers would qualify for overtime pay, the changes at the University will only add overtime classifications, not subtract any, according to University Human Resources.

The affected positions were mostly administrative and clerical, and some executive secretarial-administrative assistant positions were also affected, according to the news release. Further reviews are being planned.

The changes in the overtime classifications guarantee overtime for workers earning under $23,660 a year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Teachers remain exempted from overtime rules, but one of the additional reviews may change certain faculty non-teaching positions from exempt to non-exempt, according to the news release.
