U.Va. students defeat Maryland students in 'Crimson War'

In a blood drive titled the "Crimson War," University students defeated University of Maryland students in a contest between the schools to determine which university could garner more blood donations.

Ross Kimbel, Inter-Fraternity Council chair of community service, said the blood drive was one of the largest in University history.

"It really sent shockwaves throughout the whole state of Virginia," Kimbel said.

Kimbel said the state was short 300 units of blood before the drive, but through the Crimson War's efforts, the state is now 150 units over the shortage amount. In total, 583 University students donated blood last week as compared to Maryland's 398.

The Crimson War also focused on a competition between Inter-Sorority Council groups and IFC groups.

Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority led the ISC with 28 donors. Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity led the IFC with 26 donors. Both groups were honored with an announcement during last Saturday's football game against Maryland. All ISC sororities participated in the event, while 86 percent of IFC fraternities participated.

Each University blood donor was given an orange T-shirt that read "Give Blood. Beat Maryland." Many students wore these shirts to the football game.

Blue Crimson War T-shirts also were sold to students last week. Kimbel said the sale of these shirts raised over $2,000 for Virginia Blood Services and the Red Cross.

"The IFC and ISC decided to cover the cost of the shirts, so every dollar for purchase was a dollar donated," he said.
