University student dies in car crash

Twenty-year-old Commerce student Shawn Bryant was killed early Saturday morning in a car accident. This accident marks the fourth University student death in this academic year, University Spokesperson Carol Wood said.

Bryant was driving home to Richmond from Charlottesville when his car, a Jeep Cherokee, was hit by an Isuzu Rodeo at 2:17 a.m. The car was struck on the driver's side as Bryant attempted to make a left turn, Lieutenant John Coover of Henrico County Police Department said.

Bryant's car apparently flipped over and caught fire, Bryant's roommate Josh Hess said.

Bryant was brought to the Medical College of Virginia where he died early Saturday morning, Hospital Spokesperson Michael Ford said.

The driver of the Rodeo, an adult female, was taken to VCU medical Center and is listed in serious condition.

"We aren't sure whether speeding or alcohol was involved," Coover said. "Because it is still under investigation, no charges have been issued yet."

Bryant was a third year from Richmond who lived with his twin brother, Chris Bryant, and friends Ryan Kershner and Josh Hess. The University had always been Bryant's dream school and he loved his time here, Hess said.

"Shawn had to be one of the most caring, friendly guys I have ever known," Hess said. "He will leave behind so, so many people who miss him very dearly."

The funeral will be held Tuesday in Richmond.
