The University Medical Center was ranked one of the nation's Top 100 hospitals in a recent study by the research group Solucient, LLC.
"To be selected in the top 100 of the nation's 6,000 hospitals is an honor, and moreover, we are one of just 15 major teaching hospitals to be named this year," said R. Edward Howell, vice president and chief executive officer of the University Medical Center. "I'm extremely proud of the abilities of our faculty and staff."
The University Medical Center returned to the Top 100 list in 2004 after a hiatus in 2003. It was on the list for four years prior to 2003. It was the only Virginia hospital to make the list this year.
"Making this list shows we are providing very good clinical care and doing this in a fiscally responsible way, also," University Medical Center spokesperson Mary Jane Gore said. "It shows we really are a model hospital in the United States and a leader in how things can be done."
The study, "Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success," did its research based on more than 800 data elements that it received, according to the study's Web site.
"The Solucient group looks mainly at the benchmarks," said John Hanks, president of the clinical staff and professor of surgery at the University Medical Center. "Top 100 has a lot to do with financial aspects."
The criteria evaluated by the Solucient group included patient safety rates, length of stay in the hospital, patient mortality rates, profitability of the hospital, and how well the hospital dealt with any population growth in the area.
According to a University Health System press release, organizations that made this list treated sicker patients with fewer staff members and with better patient outcomes. Salary and benefits offered by Top 100 hospitals were $1,900 more per year for each full-time staff member and released their patients half a day earlier than peer hospitals, on average.
Solucient distinguishes hospitals that have made their list four or more times as the "best" benchmark hospitals.
In earning this distinction, the University Medical Center management, clinical and governance practices will be further researched by Solucient in order to help create data about consistently high-performing hospitals.
"The clinical staff regards this as a very nice honor," Hanks said. "It goes along with what we like to feel is a good solid clinical reputation."
