Serving the University Community Since 1890

In a list of the best universities in the world compiled by the Times of London, the University ranked 118th out of 200.

The top four universities on the list were from the United States, including Harvard, which topped the list, and the University of California, Berkeley, which ranked second.

"Despite taking seven of the top ten places, U.S. universities are less dominant than most would have predicted," the Times said.

In North America, the University ranked 47 out of 50. The Times attributed the strength of American universities to their independence from the government, which is currently being expanded further through higher education restructuring legislation like that passed in the Commonwealth.

"Non-U.S. observers may note that the big U.S. universities gain from political independence and the clout of large endowments," the Times said.

The Times also noted that the American Universities have a lot more research funding than their foreign counterparts because of the great amount of research funding provided by the government via the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health.
