City Director of Communications joins Miller Center

After six years of service to Charlottesville, the City's Director of Communications Maurice Jones will resign in October to join the staff at the University's Miller Center of Public Affairs.

"I am going to be the new director of major gifts for the Miller Center," Jones said. "I will be providing assistance with the financial development of the Center."

According to Miller Center Executive Director B. Wistar Morris, III, Jones was chosen for the position because of his work with the City.

"We sought him out," Morris said. "He was someone with an outstanding reputation in the community, and we thought he would be an asset to the Miller Center and the U.Va. community. He will be working to build support and new friends for the Miller Center in both Charlottesville and Albemarle as well as nationally."

According to Morris, Jones' move will most likely take place in October, at a time that is convenient for the City.

In his six years with the City, Jones' contributions have included two public access programs: Inside Charlottesville and The Talk of C-ville. Inside Charlottesville, a newsmagazine program, has received three national awards for excellence in city communications programming.

In addition to working for Charlottesville, Jones previously has worked with the University.

"He served on President [John T. Casteen, III's] commission on diversity," Morris said. "It was one of his pluses that he knew the University well."

Although Jones said he feels excited about his new position at the University, he said he has some regrets about ending his time with the City.

"I leave the City with mixed emotions,"

Jones said. "It is going to be difficult to say goodbye to my friends and colleagues at the City."

Jones added that he is eager to begin his new post.

"I am incredibly optimistic about the future of the Center," Jones said.

City Council Member Kendra Hamilton said Jones will be missed by those at the City as well.

"It sounds like a great opportunity" for Jones, Hamilton said. "We are very sorry to lose him and are very aware of his gifts. We wish him all the best."

According to Jones, the search for his successor will be handled by the City Manager and will include a nationwide applicant search.
