Polls open next week for the University's fall elections supervised by the University Board of Elections. According to UBE representatives, the elections will determine several Student Council positions as well as one Honor Committee position.
There are several representative positions open on Student Council, including four from the College, two from the Engineering School and one from the Commerce School. There is one available Honor Committee position for a representative from the Nursing School, UBE Chair Sara Anderson said.
In addition to deciding who will hold these representative positions, the elections will allow the student body to vote on proposed referenda, which are yet to be determined.
"There are some school-wide referenda in the works, but I don't have any specifics," Anderson said. "Those are due Friday."
According to a Council representative, no referenda have been brought to Council by students for approval.
"They can either bring them to us or get 900 signatures" to get referenda on the ballot, Council Executive Vice President Darius Nabors said.
Referenda can also be proposed by the Honor Committee and the University Judiciary Committee.
According to Anderson, the polls will be open from Friday, Oct. 7 to Wednesday Oct. 12.
"Right now is the sort of campaign period where students can register online and get their petitions signed," Anderson said. "They can register up until the day before the elections."
Additionally, Anderson said the procedure for the fall elections differs only slightly from the spring elections, which are considerably larger.
"There are really no changes between the spring and fall elections," Anderson said. "The only thing that changes is that they don't do endorsements in the fall elections"
Anderson said potential voter turnout is hard to determine without a clear idea of what referenda will be on the ballot.
"That will depend on what school-wide referenda are out there," Anderson said. "Generally, there is a lesser turnout in the fall compared to the spring. There are so many fewer positions, and they are much more specific to the College and not the entire University."
Candidate biographies will be available on the UBE Web site.
Anderson said students should involve themselves in the elections either as part of the electorate or as candidates.
"People should vote, and if they are interested, they still have a chance to register as a candidate," Anderson said.
