Virginia Festival of the Book announces speakers

The Virginia Festival of the Book recently announced that bestselling authors Judith Viorst and Michael Connelly will speak at luncheons during this year's 12th-annual festival, scheduled to run from March 22 to March 26, 2006.

Viorst will address attendees of the five-day literary festival March 23 at the Omni Charlottesville Hotel. In addition to writing children's books, including Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, Viorst has authored fiction and nonfiction pieces for adults, as well as a number of collections of poetry. She just completed writing her eighth collection, titled, "I'm Too Young to Be 70 and Other Delusions."

Viorst is the first children's author to speak at the festival, and according to Kevin McFadden, Associate Program Director of the festival, this contributes to her appeal to readers of different ages.

"This is an author who is going to appeal to a generation that has read her children's books, and a generation that understands the year milestones that she writes about," McFadden said.

Connelly will speak at the Crime Wave Luncheon March 25. Author of New York Times bestseller The Closers, the 11th installment of his detective series, Connelly recently wrote his first legal thriller, The Lincoln Lawyer, set to be released in October.

McFadden added that announcements about other authors speaking at the festival will be made throughout the year. These luncheons are among a few events that are not free to the public -- tickets cost $45.00 each.
