The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech will be kicking off the Commonwealth Challenge during the 2005-2006 academic year.
The Commonwealth Challenge is a series of competitions involving teams from each school's athletic program, aimed at promoting good sportsmanship and friendly competition among the two rivals. Many other state rivals, including UNC-Duke and California-Stanford, participate in similar annual challenges.
The winner will be decided by a point system and awarded with a trophy that features a mixture of Virginia's traditional red brick and Virginia Tech's limestone, which will be presented at the Commonwealth Day football game the following fall.
Virginia Athletic Director Craig Littlepage hopes the Commonwealth Challenge "provides the opportunity to feature spirited competition, while emphasizing good sportsmanship by everyone involved."
Sharing his enthusiasm, Jim Weaver of Virginia Tech's athletic department said he believes the Challenge "will add to the excitement of the competition" between the two schools. The first competition in the Commonwealth Challenge will take place in Charlottesville. The two schools' volleyball teams will complete at Memorial Gymnasium Oct. 4.
