Nineteen-year-old College student Megan Miller was arrested for assaulting a police officer, escaping police custody, possession of an open container of alcohol and obstruction of justice last Thursday night.
According to a University Police press release, University Officer Craig Martin was dispatched with a Charlottesville City Officer to a residence on 13th Street because of a noise complaint.
"The University officer was working with the Charlottesville officer as part of the joint patrol," University Police Capt. Michael Coleman said.
According to the release, both officers knocked on the door, announced they were responding to a noise complaint and displayed their badges. During the incident, Miller allegedly shoved Officer Martin and was arrested for assaulting a police officer and obstruction of justice. After she was inside the police car, Miller tried to escape by running away from the car, according to the release.
Even though Miller's handcuffs were properly put on, she still managed to get out of them, Coleman said.
The press release said Miller was then charged with escaping custody. Miller also was observed with an open container of beer, and she was charged with possession of an open container of alcohol.
When she arrived at the City magistrate's office, she claimed to be her sister, Sarah Miller, and presented her sister's drivers license, according to the presiding magistrate, who wished to remain anonymous because it violates the Magistrate office's code of conduct to release the information.
The source said Miller remained in jail until she was sober enough to handle the hearing, which was conducted by another magistrate. While she was in jail, she also was charged with forging public records and possession of alcohol under 21 years of age, bringing a total of six charges against her. During her hearing, she was released on bond, but the source could not comment on the conditions of the bond.
