Engineering School to host career fair

Both graduate and undergraduate Engineering students will have the opportunity to seek jobs and internships from a wide range of employers next week during the annual Engineering Career Fair.

C.J. Livesay, director of engineering and career development, said 195 companies will attend the fair in Darden Courtyard next Tuesday through Thursday.

The most popular majors in the Engineering School include systems and information engineering, computer science and computer engineering, Livesay noted. Students from these majors, however, will have the opportunity to consider a wide range of jobs in various industries at the fair.

Companies such as consulting agencies and financial institutions are seeking employees with the problem-solving skills that the University's Engineering students have developed, Livesay explained.

Such companies "didn't hire engineers 10, 12 or 15 years ago, [but] now they're the top recruiters," Livesay said. "The engineering job market today is unlike anything it's been in previous years."

Livesay said the engineering job market has not been so strong since 1999, attributing the growth of the economy and homeland security department as factors.

In fact, the companies represented at the fair often find they are not able to fill all their vacant positions, Livesay said.

Fourth-year Engineering student Mike Pilat, who has attended the fair every year and plans to go again this year to distribute his résumé, said he will look at a variety of companies, including those that do not traditionally relate to his major.

Second-year Engineering student Ross Goodwin said he plans to go to the fair for the second year in a row, as professors encouraged him to attend. Goodwin said he hopes to use the fair as an opportunity to learn about networking and possibly to find an internship.

"If it weren't successful, it wouldn't happen every year," Goodwin said.
