Student victim of attempted mugging on Jefferson Park Avenue

A female University student was involved in an attempted mugging Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 9:25 p.m. on Jefferson Park Avenue.

The girl was walking down the sidewalk of the 2000 block of Jefferson Park Avenue on her way to her apartment complex when she was assaulted, Charlottesville Police Sgt. David Jones said.

"She was approached from behind by a black male who grabbed her purse," Jones said.

However, she, "held onto her purse tightly, prompting the assailant to hit her on the side of the face," Jones added.

Two male residents of the nearby apartment complex heard the scuffle and ran down to help the victim, he said. They separated the female student from the attacker as the girl ran into the apartment to call 911, Jones added.

The "good Samaritans" intended to hold the assailant down until the police arrived; however, a second black male joined the fray to defend the attacker, Jones said.

After a brief brawl, the two perpetrators escaped and were last seen fleeing on foot toward Maury Ave, off of Jefferson Park Avenue, Jones said.
