University architect named to state board

University assistant architect Connie Warnock was recently appointed to Virginia's Art and Architectural Review Board by Gov. Tim Kaine.

According to Warnock, she was recommended to the governor by the University's Board of Visitors. Kaine then selected her to become a member of the prestigious board.

Virginia's Art and Architectural Review Board oversees all projects on state property.

The board consists of six members appointed by the governor along with a representative from the Department of Historical Resources. The board advises the governor on the "artistic character" of buildings that are to be funded by the state of Virginia.

University spokesperson Carol Wood said this appointment reflected Warnock's outstanding performance as University assistant architect.

"Connie does a great job in the architecture office," Wood said.

According to Warnock, the board focuses on the quality of the state projects and reviews them for appropriateness and content.

As a member of the state board, Warnock's main focus is ensuring the state is getting good value.

As the state board sifts through the projects, they focus on selecting plans which are "sensibly designed and thoughtfully conceived," Warnock said.

Now that she is a new member of Virginia's Art and Architectural Review Board, Warnock said she hopes to advance certain causes.

"One of my foci is sustainability," Warnock said.

She also said she wants to apply her efforts early on in the projects that are received.

Warnock said she hopes to enhance the board by "making sure that sustainable practices are incorporated early on in the design."

According to Wood, this appointment reflects positively on the University's Office of the Architect.

"It is a great honor for Connie and the University that she has been appointed to this board," Wood said.
