The combination of tomorrow night's nationally televised football game between Virginia and North Carolina, a performance of Disney on Ice at the John Paul Jones Arena and the regular traffic associated with the regular weekday operations of a major research university is expected to result in significant traffic. Several changes to parking and transportation norms are going to be in effect to handle the expected large turnout of fans, visitors and their cars Thursday.
One of the most significant changes will be the discontinuation of University buses after 3:30 p.m. according to Rebecca White, director of Parking and Transportation.
Parking for the game will be limited near University Hall and will be unavailable on the arena side of Massie Road, as this lot will be reserved for ice show parking only, according to a University press release.
Parking in the Emmet/Ivy garage, as well as in the Central Grounds garage, will be scarce due to normal evening classes. At 5:30 p.m., football parking will be allowed in those garages for $10 on a first-come, first-served basis, the release stated.
White said it should also be noted that all other parking options normally offered for football games will be available; however, they will open two, not three, hours before the game, which is scheduled to start at 7:30.
Free parking will be available at the Fontaine Research Park or North Grounds, both of which are within walking distance to the stadium.
Michael Gibson, chief of the University Police Department, said several sections of streets in the stadium vicinity will be closed starting at 5:30 p.m. Parts of Alderman Road, from Fontaine Avenue to Ivy Road will not be accessible by car, he said. Similarly, Stadium Road to Jefferson Park Avenue and McCormick Road, from Emmet St. to Alderman Road, will be shut down. These roads will remain closed until traffic has been cleared after the game, Gibson said.
White also said students with parking permits who have parked prior to 5:30 in their respective lots or garages will not be required to move their vehicles in order to accommodate game-day crowds.
"Once you have a spot, you have it, but students should keep in mind how busy it is going to be," said White.
