Fifty-one physicians at the University of Virginia Medical Center have been named among America's top physicians in a book published this month entitled "America's Top Doctors." The book, now in its sixth edition, is published annually by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., an independent research company which releases consumer guides about the health care community.
According to a Castle Connolly press release, the list of more than 5,000 physicians is compiled through a peer-recommended and mediated process involving thousands of medical professionals. The book divides doctors by specialty and subspecialty before listing them in alphabetical order according to geographical region.
Medical School Dean Dr. Arthur Garson Jr. called the listing a "real indication of what our peers think of us." The recognition of University physicians from 19 different specialties is an "outstanding honor," he said.
With 51 doctors mentioned, the University of Virginia Medical Center is ranked 19th in the Castle Connolly list of the "Top 50 Hospitals." For comparison, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore is ranked second. It is the top-ranked university-related hospital, with 130 doctors recognized.
"Top hospitals attract top doctors -- this is no coincidence," said Dr. William Liss-Levinson, vice president and chief strategy & operations officer for Castle Connolly.
According to Liss-Levinson, the information compiled in "America's Top Doctors" is used both by medical professionals and patients alike. He noted that the publication has enjoyed an "excellent reputation" in the medical community and as is commonly used by doctors to make referrals to specialists.
"Not every [doctor] has information at their fingertips," Liss-Levinson said. "They need information they can trust."
Garson noted that, with the addition of these newly-recognized University physicians, a quarter of the entire Medical Center faculty has been ranked by a Castle Connolly publication. University doctors can also be found in the company's list of "Best Doctors" and "Top Doctors for Cancer."
This recent recognition comes in a long list of honors bestowed upon the Medical Center. Liss-Levinson said he believes the University Medical Center has consistently ranked among the nation's top 30 hospitals in Castle Connelly's annual rankings.
Garson said these listings are significant to Medical School students.
"I sure would want to train with these doctors," he said.
