The Presidents' Council of the Inter-Fraternity Council presented a $7,000 donation to local charities yesterday with money raised through the first annual Mid-Autumns Carnival, hosted by the University Greek community Sept. 23.
The University chapter of Building Tomorrow: Destination Kampala and the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) each received $3,500 to their respective charities.
Jeremy Pollack, IFC vice president for membership, expressed his gratitude for the efforts of all those who participated in the Mid-Autumns Carnival.
"I wanted to thank all of those who participated in making the inaugural year such an overwhelming success," Pollack said. "With 100 percent participation from all four Greek councils, I am so proud at our ability as a Greek community to unite under one cause and put on such a great event."
The Mid-Autumns Carnival was the "brain-child" of Pollack and enjoyed support from all of the Greek councils, IFC public relations spokesperson Layton Hill said.
"Each chapter in all of the Greek councils hosted a booth, and so it was really a joint effort," Hill said.
The Mid-Autumns Carnival attracted donations from the Student Council, University Bookstore and Fourth-Year Trustees. This year's success has allowed for the carnival to become an official annual event, Hill said.
Building Tomorrow: Destination Kampala inched closer to their goal of the $32,000 necessary to build an elementary school in Kampala, Uganda. Third-year College student Mary Slosson, director of the University's Building Tomorrow chapter, said her organization hopes to reach this goal by the end of spring semester.
CRHA is a local organization that manages urban renewal and provides rehabilitation loans to the city. It plans to use its donation to refurbish two playgrounds.
CRHA director Noah Schwartz said he was excited to be able to give back to children.
"As dollars tighten for our activities, the first things that get cut are the things like playgrounds," Schwartz said. "Donations like these help us make a difference in helping serve the children at our sites."
Second-year College student Margaret Fowler will serve as the chairperson for next year's carnival. Planning has already begun.
