In its young life, the John Paul Jones Arena has played host to national acts such as Dave Matthews and Kenny Chesney. This Thursday it will be opening its doors to 150 employers from across the nation for the University's annual Diversity Career Day.
Diversity Career Day is the "largest single-day career fair of the year," said Sarah Van Vleet, events manager for University Career Services.
"We'll have school systems there, government agencies, non profits, large corporations [and] local agencies," Van Vleet said. "There will also be students in attendance from schools across Virginia and D.C., since it is a regional event."
The program has been held for 23 years and encourages diversity in the workplace and promotes student interests in possible careers or internships, according to Van Vleet. "The companies that are attending are companies that value diversity in the work force, and they are looking for candidates with all kinds of backgrounds and experience."
While the program aims to promote diversity, it does not specifically target minority students, said Megan Roberts, Arts & Sciences Council vice president.
"It's definitely for all students, and the diversity refers to the amount of employers that will be present," Roberts said. "There are employers for all major consumer product companies. It should be a good opportunity for people not only looking for jobs but for summer internships."
The event is sponsored by Macy's and the Central Intelligence Agency, which Van Vleet said has a long-standing relationship with recruiting from the University.
"The University of Virginia is one of their target schools that they always recruit at," said Van Vleet. "This is a large event, and they get to meet a lot of different students, and that's something they really like."
The career fair will last from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to undergraduates of all majors.
