Turning point for Cavaliers came against old nemesis

By Eric Strow Cavalier Daily Senior Writer The world of NCAA soccer is a turbulent place; the top teams all have similar records, and one loss can send a team plummeting in the rankings. The pressure is even greater on Atlantic Coast Conference teams, as there are typically at least five teams from the ACC in the NCAA top 10, with perennial powers such as Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest, Clemson and Maryland contending for the title each year.

That is how the Cavaliers, now heading to St. Louis to take on the No. 8 UCLA Bruins in the College Cup semifinals, found themselves needing a turnaround midway through their season.

After falling to Duke 2-1 Oct. 6 in Durham, the Cavaliers needed some spark to bring them back to the top of the ACC. The offense had been struggling mightily, as evidenced by a near loss to St. Francis
