Kaine declares state of emergency before ice storm Gov. Tim Kaine declared a state of emergency yesterday for the entire Commonwealth as a result of an impending ice storm, according to a press release issued by his office.

The primary reason for the declaration of emergency is not to prepare the entire state for emergency but to free up resources by "facilitating the purchasing and deployment" when swift action is called for, said Bob Spieldenner, the director of public affairs at the Department of Emergency Management.

It is estimated that the northern and western portions of the state will receive between one quarter and one half inch of ice accumulation. Some parts of the state may receive up to an inch of ice.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is coordinating other departments to ensure fast responses to dangerous circumstances that may present themselves as a result of the weather, according to the press release.

The National Guard will deploy 150 guardsmen. The Virginia Public Inquiry Center will be available to field any storm-related concerns and can be reached at (866) 880-4288.

Kaine suggested in the release that "residents should prepare now by collecting emergency supplies, making plans to communicate with family members and others, and monitoring local weather information and other emergency instructions."
