State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, D-Charlottesville, is in the process of hiring an exploratory committee as he contemplates entering the 2009 gubernatorial race. He has not officially declared his candidacy.
"We are hiring staff for his political action committee," Deeds' spokesperson Peter Jackson said. "However, he has not made a determination for what his future political ambitions will be."
Politics Prof. Larry Sabato was optimistic about Deeds' potential run.
"Deeds came within just a few hundred votes from being attorney general in 2005," he said. "He would be a logical candidate for governor if [Mark] Warner doesn't run."
