Honor passes new bylaw amendment

The Honor Committee passed an addition to its bylaws yesterday and also announced plans to host an open meeting for the University community and a debate of single sanction as efforts to engage the student body.

The bylaw addition was approved as an effort to increase transparency of its operations and policies.

"This section allows for greater clarification because it places all the honor-specific terms that were previously spread throughout the bylaws in one place," said Honor Committee Chair Alison Tramba.

The open Rotunda meeting will be held by the Committee Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. The meeting will give the current Committee an opportunity to discuss its accomplishments in public and will allow students and faculty to discuss their concerns for the next Committee in advance of the upcoming elections, according to Vice Chair for Services A-J Aronstein.

In another effort to make the community more aware of honor issues in the run-up to the election, the Committee will be holding a debate on the single sanction. Representatives of student groups from both sides of the issue will debate the current policy and alternatives to the single sanction.

"It will include students who are very involved in supporting campaigns for opposing sides of the debate," Tramba said. "There will also be students who are more moderate providing their opinions as well."

Tramba noted that a referendum to change sanction policy has been proposed by a student group, though nothing has been brought forward by anyone on the Committee.

"One of the main interests in doing this kind of debate so close to the elections is that students will definitely [have] a chance to vote on some sort of sanction change," said Aronstein. "The closer [to the elections] we can get a debate publicized the better we feel about it."
