UJC Engineering Rep

Ward Williams SEAS III Major: Systems Engineering Hometown: Greenville, SC Activities, positions, associations: Students 4 Students International Kappa Sigma Fraternity

Current office/position:

What are the responsibilities of the position you are seeking, and why are you qualified to fulfill those responsibilities?

My responsibilities include a weekly meeting and regular representation as judge for trials. I am qualified to fulfill these responsibilities because they align with the same responsibilities I followed as a judge on First-Year Judiciary Committee. Additionally, I feel that some of my qualities, including being organized, reliable, fair and honest, will suit well with the UJC and my responsibilities, if elected.

If elected, what is the most pressing issue that you could realistically address, and how would you do so?

I feel like the current bylaws set by UJC are fair and appropriate. I do not see any areas that I would like to address or change.

What positive contributions have you made to the University community?

I have contributed to the University community with volunteerism activities through Madison House such as tutoring at Venerable and the Big Sib Program. Additionally, I'm currently involved with Students 4 Students International.

Current office/position: SEAS Judiciary Representative

What are the responsibilities of the position you are seeking, and why are you qualified to fulfill those responsibilities?

Judiciary representatives must have an understanding of the values of the University community and be able to appropriately adjudicate violations of those standards. I believe that my experience, deliberate and fair-minded approach and appreciation for the mission of the UJC will allow me to fulfill these responsibilities.

If elected, what is the most pressing issue that you could realistically address, and how would you do so?I would like to work for increased transparency of UJC procedures. This can be accomplished by strengthening the role of the educator position and increasing outreach to the University community through The Cavalier Daily and other avenues.

What positive contributions have you made to the University community?

I have offered tremendous support to Corner restaurants through frequent patronage, sore throats cheering for the Wahoos at sporting events and countless mechanical pencils left behind after late nights at Thornton Stacks and Clark Library.

What are the responsibilities of the position you are seeking, and why are you qualified to fulfill those responsibilities?

Representatives to UJC serve as judges, work with counselors, investigators and educators, and work to improve the committee. As someone who's grown up in three different countries, I've had the experience of being both a member of the majority and minority. I'm acutely aware of the issues facing minority groups -- ethnic, gender or religion-based. My background has taught me the importance of maintaining neutrality when observing an issue from multiple perspectives. It's also taught me that despite significant differences in opinion on many issues, people share the same expectations of fairness, justice and happiness. In 2006, I was treasurer of the Ballroom Dance Club, a CIO with more than 100 members.

If elected, what is the most pressing issue that you could realistically address, and how would you do so?

UJC handles all breach of the University's Standards of Conduct but unfortunately does not have the kind of institutional presence Honor has. There should be increased awareness and transparency of UJC because UJC handles many important matters and serves an equally important role in this community. It is regrettable that several racial incidents take place every semester. If elected, I will investigate and adjudicate alleged violations of the University's Standards of Conduct to help maintain this great institution as a safe place, with equality and justice for all. Increased awareness and transparency can be achieved by a weekly or biweekly column in The Cavalier Daily that informs students of different aspects of UJC. Perpetrators of hate crimes should be punished according to UJC bylaws. The punishment should emphasize work sanctions that place the individuals in an environment with increased contacts with the target group to give the individual the opportunity to recognize our similarities. After all, we are at least 99 percent genetically identical.

What positive contributions have you made to the University community?

As a volunteer in the U.Va. Hospital operating room, it is my responsibility to ensure there are adequate supplies. I also place and prepare stretchers to allow staff members to concentrate on preparing patients for surgery. As treasurer of the Ballroom Dance Club, I ensured adequate funding to allow over 100 members to attend lessons taught by nationally renowned instructors, compete in regional competitions and attend various social events. As competition organization chair, I am in the process of creating a regional competition at U.Va. to give club members and local residents additional opportunity to participate in ballroom dancing.
