Fire sends three to hospital

A fire early yesterday morning on Lewis Mountain Road left two people in critical condition and a University alumnus in fair condition.

All three victims were taken to University Hospital, according to Charlottesville spokesperson Ric Barrick.

The first fire engines arrived at 2015 Lewis Mountain Road three minutes after the fire department received the call at 3:46 a.m., said David Hartman, Charlottesville Fire Department battalion chief.

"The initial report from the scene indicated that everyone was out of the home," Hartman said.

Upon arriving at the home, however, a person who had been in the building indicated there were still two people inside.

Hartman said firefighters immediately entered the building and removed two victims, one male and one female, through a window.

The male victim was unconscious and not breathing, while the female was still breathing, Barrick said.

Before they were transported to the hospital, "life-saving measures were performed," Hartman said.

According to Barrick, these two victims, who are not University students, were spending the night at the residence following a party. They are both in very critical condition after suffering from burns and severe smoke inhalation. The third victim, a University alumnus who lived in the apartment, was not as seriously injured.

The fire was under control within 10 minutes of the fire department's arrival on the scene, he added, noting that the apartment was not equipped with a fire detector.

Barrick said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
