Honor, UJC representatives elected

The University Board of Elections announced the newly elected Honor and University Judiciary committee members last night. Third-year students Ben Cooper, Linda Liu and Allie Moore were elected representatives to the Honor Committee from the College of Arts & Sciences. Third-year students Dean de la Peña and Connor Sullivan and second-year student Merriam Mikhail will serve as College representatives to the University Judiciary Committee.

Cooper pledged to re-examine the concept of honor at the University. He noted his desire to institute a system of benefits that will reward students for upholding the honor code.

"What we really need to focus on is why we instituted the system in the first place," Cooper said.

He also noted the importance of looking past the sanctioning issue, which remained the primary focus of debate about honor in the days leading up to the election.

"What I don't want is for it to dominate our discussion so we don't move beyond that," he said.

A referendum to institute a multiple sanctioning system failed to pass in the election by 62 votes.

De la Peña said he was pleased with the election turnout.

"I was really surprised to see that many people voting," he said. "People really seem to be paying attention to the candidates."

De la Peña said his primary focus will be increasing the transparency and efficiency of UJC.

"UJC is less transparent than it could be and I think that's a concern for a lot of students," he said.

Other Honor Committee representatives include third-year Architecture students Linda Bartusiak and Andrew Ingram, third-year Commerce students Eric Flow and Alyssa Guo and Education students Katrina Custodio and Timothy Shea. Third-year student Vanessa Trahan and second-year student Thaddeus Darden were elected Honor representatives for the Engineering School and Adam Trusner will represent the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Second-year Law student Josh Hess, co-founder of Students for the Preservation of Honor, was elected, and second-year Law student Laura Holland was re-elected. Both Alexander Hawkins and Jon Overdevest were also re-elected to their positions as representatives from the Medical School. Third-year students Rebecca Green and J. Ashley Jacob were elected representatives for the Nursing School.

Representing UJC for the Architecture School will be third-year student Elissa Kaufman and second-year student Napatra Charassuvichakanich. Third-year students Katie McIntosh and Mary Leigh Nugent will represent the Commerce School. Second-year student Michael Chapman will represent the Education School.
