Paying the Profs.

The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources published a survey recently that examined faculty salary changes over the past year.

The survey found that faculty had enjoyed a 3.8 percent increase in salary overall, but that there were disparities among professors based on academic department and field of interest. Faculty in professional and engineering-related disciplines take home the biggest paychecks on average, according to CUPA-HR spokesperson Missy Cline.

According to University representatives, U.Va. faculty are no exception to the national trend of variation by discipline. Market trends, budget freezes, salary compression and competition between institutions factor into the salary variation among and within the schools of the University.

State Funding for Faculty Salaries

Each year, the state of Virginia examines funding for salary increases at public institutions across the state. In 2006, the commonwealth approved a 4.9 percent increase in faculty salaries at the University. The Board of Visitors supplemented that increase, bringing the total to five percent, according to Senior Associate Provost Anda Webb.

That five percent increase represents a total of $6,324,564. One percent of that total was held as part of the Provost
