Roads to close this weekend for Charlottesville 10-Miler

Numerous roads on and around Grounds will be closed the morning of Saturday, March 31 for the 32nd annual Charlottesville 10-Miler road race.

U.Va. Patrol Captain Donald McGee said University Police will "only enforce roads that are on Grounds." McGee said the roads included are in the North Grounds, Stadium and Central Grounds areas.

"Each one of these locations will have an officer stationed there when the race starts," he said. "Traffic is shut down until the racers have passed that specific area."

McGee said patrolling will begin around 7:30 a.m. and will continue until the race ends at approximately 9:45 a.m.

Policing for the race generally "runs very smoothly," McGee said. "It's the same thing we've done for the last twenty years."

According to a press release from the Piedmont Court Appointed Special Advocates, the events primary beneficiary, roads will also be blocked in the Grady, Preston and Rugby areas.

Most roads will be "closed down until 10 but there will be activity until about 11," said Sarah Lohman, development director for Piedmont CASA. "Intersections aren't necessarily going to be closed -- they'll just be blocked."

Lohman suggests staying away from University Hall, where the race is slated to begin and end, until at least noon.
