StudCo discusses concern over amendment

Student Council passed a resolution last night to encourage the creation of a CIO to coordinate neighborhood watches in off-Ground areas and also discussed concerns stemming from the recently approved amendments to its constitution.

"The resolution throws Student Council's support behind the idea of creating a neighborhood watch system in the off-Grounds areas of JPA, Lewis Mountain and Barracks/Rugby," said College rep. Taylor, who sponsored the bill.

Taylor said he plans to contact the Charlottesville Police Department within the next week, adding that he also plans to talk with various CIOs that might be interested in helping organize the watch.

A potential problem with the wording of Council recently approved constitutiona clauses. The wording change may have implications for the repesentation of SCPS.

SCPS representative Michael Winn introduced a resolution to hold a University-wide referendum to strike the words "full-time student" from the section of the recently altered Student Council constitution that states the qualifications of representatives.

Winn expressed concern that the term "full-time" excluded students from the SCPS from serving on Council because the University considers all students enrolled in SCPS to be part-time students, regardless of the number of credit hours they choose to take.

Council President Darius Nabors said proposing a referendum to change the wording of the new constitution might not be the best option, instead proposing to add an allowance for the part-time status of SCPS students to the by-laws of the new version of the constitution.

Winn said that he hoped to "remove the ambiguity" created by the words "full-time" by "removing the restriction all together."
