StudCo passes bill addressing qualifications for serving on Council

Student Council approved a bill last night resolving recent uncertainty concerning what qualifications students must meet to serve on Council. Student Council President Darius Nabors sponsored the bill.

"The bill makes it so the individual schools decide what qualifies a student to be a representative on Council," Nabors said.

Nabors added that the bill will let schools such as the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, whose students are defined by the University as "part-time" students, decide what qualifications its student must meet to serve on Council.

The uncertainty concerning what qualifies a student to serve on Council began when SCPS representative Michael Winn raised a concern that the newly approved Student Council Constitution required representatives to be "full-time students." Winn said since SCPS students are defined as "part-time," the phrase "full-time" disqualified SCPS students from serving on Council.

Winn previously introduced a resolution to Council that proposed the phrase "full-time" should be struck from the new constitution but said he approved of the new bill.

"The schools are now allowed to define their own criteria, rather then have Council decide it for them," Winn said. "What is there not to like?"

Council also passed a bill to create a student task force to provide student input on how office space will be used in the newly proposed student center.
