Students elected third-year College student Lauren Tilton to serve as Student Council president last night.
"I think this will be a really exciting upcoming year," Tilton said. "I think we will be able to continue the good work Council has already done and also come up with ways to be creative."
Tilton also said she hoped to "truly be able to represent the student body."
Tilton was one of two candidates out of the six-candidate race not currently on Student Council. Though she said she was less experienced then her competitors, she also said she will learn quickly.
Melissa Warnke, second-year College student and current Student Council transfer liaison, was elected executive vice president of Student Council.
"I'm so excited to have this opportunity" Warnke said. "I'm thrilled to be able to work with the new Council in the future."
Warnke also said she hopes to be able to work with Student Council to "reach out to more and more students in the next year and address all the issues students care about."
Third-year College student Catherine Tobin was elected Student Council vice president for organizations in an uncontested race.
Tobin said her goals include buying sound equipment for Contracted Independent Organizations, increasing fundraising opportunities for CIOs and providing more information sessions for those seeking to start CIOs.
Second-year Engineering student Jack Wilson was elected Student Council vice president for administration, also in an uncontested race.
College representatives elected include first-year students Matt Schrimper, Katie Lee and Ronald Barba. Second-year students Kayla Wherry and Sterling Elmore were also elected.
Elmore said she looks forward to working on safety issues and improving the transparency of Student Council.
"Overall I am just really excited," Elmore said.
Third-year students Rajarshi Nigam and Hyon Ko were elected from the Engineering School.
First-year student Steven Reilly was elected to represent the Architecture School.
Michael Winn was re-elected representative of the Continuing and Professional Studies School. The Graduate Arts & Sciences School re-elected Tom Bryan. Courtney Long was elected to represent the Graduate Education School.
Outgoing Student Council President Darius Nabors said he believes the newly elected Council members "will make an outstanding Council."
