Police make arrest for JPJ bomb threat

University police arrested a Greene County man on charges of phoning in a bomb threat to John Paul Jones Arena.

Jarrett Dean Payne of Ruckersville, 22, was arrested for calling the Greene County Dispatch Center twice Feb. 1 during the men's basketball game against Duke.

According to University Police Capt. Michael A. Coleman, Payne made two telephone calls that night, saying a bomb was inside the arena. A subsequent investigation followed, culminating in the arrest of Payne March 29.

Payne was charged with two felonies under Virginia code 18.2-83, Coleman said.

A hearing for Payne was scheduled for Mar. 30. At press time, the Albemarle County circuit court had not returned calls with a scheduled court date for Payne.
