Student could face time in jail for brandishing weapon at Wilsdorf Hall

Second-year College student Christopher Allen Smith was charged with brandishing a weapon at a bond hearing held yesterday morning.

Smith was arrested at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after police received reports of a male with a gun at Wilsdorf Hall. A dozen police officers responded, evacuating and searching the building.

According to a police report, Smith said he and his classmates were using a BB gun as a prop while filming a class project.

Smith could face jail time, Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney Jim Camblos said.

"In the worst-case scenario, Smith will face up to 12 months in jail," he said.

The police are still investigating the event, Camblos said.

"In my opinion, the police acted very appropriately under all the circumstances," he added.
