Estimated reading time: 1 minutes

The University Board of Visitors recently elected John O. Wynne vice rector of the University at its June meeting. He will begin his two-year term July 1, after which time he will automatically become rector of the University.

"He was the only nominee and he was elected by unanimous consent," current University rector Thomas F. Farrell, II said, adding that the Board has a "high level of confidence in his abilities."

During his term as vice rector, Wynne will be responsible for assuming the rector's duties in the event of the rector's absence in addition to upholding his other commitments as a Board member.

According to a press release, Wynne was originally appointed to the Board in March of 2003. He is the retired president and chief executive officer of Landmark Communications, Inc., a Norfolk-based company that owns several media outlets, including The Virginian-Pilot and The Weather Channel. He continues to sit on the company's board of directors.
