Students pay penance for theft of Hokie Bird

The nine University Phi Society fraternity pledges charged in the March 24 theft of a hokie bird statue in Blacksburg, Va. recently reimbursed the Blacksburg Partnership for damages andspent last week volunteering in the city of Blacksburg as a part of community service requirements. The men will be required to perform other community tasks, such as cleaning and painting various public Blacksburg locations.

The students' attorney paid $11,000 to the Blacksburg Partnership, which will cover the cost of the $10,000 damages to the "Farmer Hokie" statue and the cost of a $1,000 reward issued by the partnership, partnership Executive Director Diane Akers said. The statue was one of more than 70 statues painted by Blacksburg residents to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Blacksburg Partnership.

"All of that money will be reinvested in the town of Blacksburg," Akers said.

Beyond the fines, the nine men spent the week cleaning the other Hokie bird statues, Akers said.

According to Blacksburg Police Sgt. S. M. Taylor, the students still face possible criminal charges that will be decided at their pending court date.
