University loses main Internet connection

At about 10:20 a.m. yesterday, the University lost its main Internet connection and began relying on its backup link, which has a much lower bandwidth. As a result, many users experienced significant delays while using the Internet.

"Our primary connection comes to us through a circuit from Verizon, and that's what's down," Communications and Systems Director Jim Jokl said.

The connection is down because of a fiber cut, according to officials at Verizon.

Although the location of the cut is now known, there is still no indication of when the fiber will be repaired. Comcast and Verizon fibers often intersect one another, and the particular fiber that is damaged is a Verizon fiber, but it is aligned with one of Comcast's fibers.

"We don't have an estimated time yet, but companies are usually pretty quick once they know what's wrong," Jokl said. "It's very unusual that it would take them this long to find and fix a problem."
