University professor receives award from Virginia Health Department

Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, chair of the University department of orthopaedic surgery, recently received the Commissioner's Healthcare Workforce Recognition Award from the Virginia Department of Health. Laurencin was one of five recipients of the award and was honored for his work with students of all academic levels.

The award was created to "identify initiatives that would be able to be replicated in other areas," said Karen Reed, a Virginia Department of Health representative.

Reed added that the award is intended to highlight individual and organizational innovation.

University Health System spokesperson Mary Gore said Laurencin has expressed "a long-term interest" in welcoming people into the health care profession.

"He is a model ... for other institutions," she added.

Reed noted award recipients' work covered different aspects of health care.

"We were pleased that the nominations represented a variety of health care initiatives," Reed said, adding that by focusing on the "recruitment and retention of health care professionals," the Virginia Department of Health hopes to increase access to health care.
