The Princeton Review recently recognized the Darden School as one of the country's leading business schools after its professors received top marks. In the 2008 Best 290 Business Schools, the Darden School was ranked number one in the category of best professors and placed in the top 10 in several other categories.
Consistently ranked as one of the best business schools in the country, this year Darden outdid last year's ranking of number two for best professors.
"We have known about the high-quality faculty at Darden for years," Darden Dean Bob Bruner said. "But it's always nice to be recognized by others who understand what it takes to be a top notch educator. We pride ourselves on our faculty, their excellence and commitment."
Darden also ranked in the top 10 in the categories of best career prospects, best classroom experience, best campus environment, best campus facilities and most family-friendly.
According to Adrinda Kelly, senior editor of the book, the rankings are based on 19,000 student surveys conducted over a period of three years. She added that this method is the best because "for the nuances and specifics of the schools you have to look at the opinions of students themselves".
For the best professors category, students answered questions "concerning how good, experienced and accessible outside the classroom their professors are," according to Kelly. She cites professors' availability, experience and commitment as contributing to a stimulating, intensive and interesting atmosphere at Darden.
According to Ellen Briones, Darden director of public information,? the survey had a high response rate, and students feel the favorable rankings accurately represent the Darden School.
"It's particularly nice to rank this high with the Princeton Review because the feedback comes directly from the students," Briones said.
According to the book, Darden is a "unique, challenging and spirited MBA program" renowned for "the outstanding reputation of the faculty and students, the rigorous and exciting case method and the broad focus on general management that the school offers."
Kelly emphasized the importance of student opinion in the Princeton Review's evaluation of the school.
"We at Princeton Review think Darden is an excellent school, that's why it's on the list," Kelly said. "But student opinion is what you really have to consider, and the students have reported that it is excellent on many levels, especially when it comes to professors."
The Darden School was not the only University school that received a positive review from a recent Princeton Review study; the University Law School also ranked in the top 10 in Princeton Review's Best 170 Law Schools in the categories of best quality of life and best career prospects.
