String of robberies continues

Following a streak of robberies occurring on the outskirts of Grounds, an armed robbery involving a University student occurred at about 1 a.m. yesterday in the 900 block of Cherry Avenue.

The attackers were described as two medium-build black males between 20 and 30 years old, according to Sergeant S.R. Smith of the Charlottesville Police Department, who is leading the investigation.

They got away with an undisclosed amount of money, but no one was injured, Smith said.

Smith said will take further investigation before police are able to determine whether the series of recent robberies are related.

Along with offering suggestions to avoid crime situations and increasing police patrolling, Smith also revealed a new effort that the Charlottesville Police Department is trying to implement.

"One of the major programs is enforcing no trespassing on railroad tracks," Smith said, "since most of the recent robberies occurred there."

John Nelson, Student Council co-chair of the Safety and Wellness Committee, discussed the student response to this recent outbreak.

"We've been in a lot of discussion with both Charlottesville and University Police Department, and in the next couple of weeks we'll be holding a forum to provide students and police officers with an opportunity to talk about these incidents," Nelson said.

Furthermore, Nelson believes that "an ongoing dialogue between police officers, students, administrators and the City of Charlottesville is essential to improving off Grounds safety."
