Two men were apprehended and charged with capital murder early yesterday morning in connection with the homicide of University alumna Jayne McGowan, according to Ric Barrick, director of communications for the City of Charlottesville. Investigation is still underway.
Police officials found McGowan, a 2003 College graduate, dead in her home Friday afternoon, having suffered a gunshot to the head.
The accused, 22-year-old William Douglas Gentry, Jr. and 18-year-old Michael Stuart Pritchett, both reside at 539 Caroline St., which Barrick said is located near the area where McGowan's car was found Sunday. Information gained from public assistance helped lead to the arrests, Barrick added. According to a press release from the city, "probable cause developed over the course of the evening." Barrick said the arrests occurred without incident.
Gentry and Pritchett are currently being held at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail where they will await trial. If convicted, the suspects could face the death penalty.
