The No. 1 Virginia men's tennis team earned two road victories against top-12 opponents during the weekend, defeating No. 8 Illinois 4-3 Friday and No. 12 Notre Dame 5-2 Sunday in its first two away matches of the season.
In Friday's 1-point victory against the Fighting Illini, the Cavaliers (3-0) lost the doubles point and the first two of three singles points to go down 1-3. Illinois (1-1), however, would not win another match, as No. 1 senior Somdev Devvarman, No. 3 senior Dominic Inglot and junior Ted Angelinos all took their singles matches to secure the win. Devvarman won his match in straight sets (6-3, 6-4), while Inglot and Angelinos both lost the first set of their matches before winning their last two sets to complete the dramatic comeback.
This match broke a winning streak of 15 for the Fighting Illini at the Atkins Tennis Center.
In Sunday's match against the Irish, the Cavaliers never trailed, as they first swept the doubles matches to take the initial point. The Irish tied the score at 1-1 when Notre Dame senior Sheeva Parbhu upset Inglot in the first singles match, but Angelinos, Devvarman and No. 12 senior Treat Huey won the next three singles matches to put the match out of reach.
Virginia returns home for a match Friday evening at home against VCU before traveling to Ann Arbor for an away matchup with No. 21 Michigan.
