Thanks to the support of a University professor's father, a collection of early American maps from 1500 to 1800 is now on display in the Special Collections Library.
"It dramatically strengthens our map collections and our early North American history collections," University librarian Karin Wittenborg said. "It's a nice complement to Albert Small's gift of the Declaration of Independence collection a year ago."
The map collection was donated by Seymour Schwartz, a professor in the University of Rochester's surgery department.
Architecture Prof. Ken Schwartz, Seymour Schwartz's son, said the maps will make an excellent addition to the University.
"He is extremely excited about having this collection at U.Va.," Schwartz said about his father. "He felt that the strength of U.Va.'s collection in Americana is extremely strong and that his maps would complement this collection very well. He also thought that this University would encourage the use of these materials by students and faculty as an active part of the educational process for classical research."
Schwartz said his father began negotiating with the University three years ago regarding the exhibition, and the final arrangements were made in late summer 2007.
